Garry Winogrand at SFMOMA
I saw the terrific Garry Winogrand retrospective at SFMOMA last night. There are hundreds of prints covering his work from the 1950’s through the mid-1980’s. Many of the photographs are instantly recognizable, but there are about 100 that are printed for the first time. (Winogrand left behind some 250,000 photos that either had not been developed or printed at the time of his death in 1984.)
The exhibition will be at SFMOMA through 2 June 2013, when the museum closes for two years during construction of a new wing to house the substantial and newly acquired Doris and Donald Fischer collection of contemporary art. After departing San Francisco, the Winogrand exhibition will go to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Jeu de Paume in Paris, and Fundación MAPFRE in Madrid.
